Matthias Teichert sandte mir freundlicherweise die folgende
Namensdeutung zu 'Schmalowski'.
Sie stammt von dem Author Hoffman, William F. ('Polish
Surnames:
Origins & Meanings']

+ + +
I tried looking for every variant of the name I could think of,
and
the only one that showed up was
S~MIAL~OWSKI. I'm using S~ to stand for the S with an accent over
it,
and L~ for L with a
slash through it; it is often vital to distinguish betwwn the
plain
letters and the ones with diacritical
marks, and the tilde ~ is a reliable way of doing so (although
obviously it would be much better if all
systems implemented Unicode and we could use the actual characters
with
confidence they will
appear correctly on other systems!) The accented S is pronouced
much
like 'sh' in English, and
therefore is comparable to Sch- in German, although Polish SZ-
actually
is a closer match. I looked
for SZMALOWSKI and SZWALOWSKI however, and found nothing.
So S~MIAL~OWSKI, which Poles pronounce roughly
'sh'm'yah-WOFF-skee',
is the name that
seems most likely to have been adapted to German phonetics as
SCHMALOWSKI. I cannot say this
is so with certainty, but from the information I could
find, this seems the best match.
As of 1990, according to the best data available (the 'Slownik
nazwisk wspolczesnie w Polsce
uzywanych' - 'Directory of Surnames in Current Use in Poland',
which
covers about 94% of the
population of Poland), there were 403 Polish citizens named
S'mial~owski; so it is not a particularly
common name, but not extremely rare, either. The Poles
by that name were scattered in small
numbers all over the country, with no particular concentration in
any
one area.
If you'd like to study the data for yourself, and perhaps
experiment
with various spellings, go to this
Website:
http://www.herby.com.pl/herby/indexslo.html
If you need help understanding how to use it, you cn read my
article. The
'Slownik nazwisk' Is
Online!' in the August issue of the free e-zine 'Gen Dobry' at
this
site:
http://www.polishroots.com/gendobry/GenDobry_vol3_no8.htm
S~MIAL~OWSKI clearly comes from the root seen in the adjective
_s~mial~y_, 'bold'. Surnames
in the form X-owski mean literally 'of the X's _', where the blank
is
to be filled in with something
so obvious it didn't need to be spelled out -- usually
'kin' or 'place'. So in some cases X-owski can
mean 'kin of [the] X'. But most often it refers to the
name of a place where the family lived at
some point centuries ago,a place name beginning with the X part,
which
may have various suffices
that were detached before the -owski was added. If the
family was noble, they owned an estate
there; if not, they lived and worked there. So while X-owski can
just
mean 'kin of X', it generally
means 'one from the place of X'.
This name could, therefore, be interpreted as meanng 'kin of the
bold one'.
But I would expect it
to refer more often to a place with a name along the lines of
S~mial~owo, which in turn would have
gotten that name because of some connection with a bold person.
There
are at least a couple of
places with names that might qualify, such as S~mial~ki in former
Cze~stochowa and
S~mial~owice in former Wal~brzych province. There might be other
possibilities too small to show
up in my sources.
In cases of this sort, genealogical research into the history of
the
specific family in question is the
only think that might turn up firm evidence as to how the name
developed and which place it
referred to. In other words, I can't answer that question; but
with any
luck, perhaps you will be able
to.
There are other possible derivations that could apply. For
instance,
a German family with the name
of Schmahl (per Hans Bahlow from the adjective meaning
'small, narrow, slight') that lived in an
area with many Poles might find that their name was Polonized as
Szmalowski, 'of the
Szmals/Schmahls'. This is not farfetched; such things happened. In
some
ways that strikes me as a
better fit than S~mial~owski. But as I say, it's the kind of thing
that
would happen only in isolated
cases, and only research into the family history could
establish whether it's more than an interesting
hypothesis.
